Antique Imari
Japanese Antiques
At IKENOCHA, we offer traditional Japanese ceramics, including koimari and imari porcelain. These beautiful pieces not only enhance the enjoyment of matcha and desserts, but also stand out as unique and exquisite interior decorations.
Koimari refers to Imari porcelain produced from the early to mid-Edo period (early 17th century to mid-18th century). These wares were made primarily for export and were highly valued in Europe. It is said that in 1616, the Korean potter Risampei began producing these wares in Arita (present-day Saga Prefecture). Many of them were exported through the Dutch East India Company. Koimari is characterized by its vibrant colors and intricate designs. Initially, underglaze paintings in blue and white predominated, but later pieces featured polychrome overglaze decorations, influenced by Japanese, Chinese, and European designs. These pieces were used as everyday utensils and decorative items, and were considered luxury goods in Europe.
Imari refers to ceramics made in and around Arita, Saga Prefecture, and is named after the port of Imari through which they were exported. From the late 18th to the 19th century, production became more focused on the domestic market. Although simpler designs became more common, quality remained high, and many practical items for everyday use were produced. Today, Arita and Imari porcelain remain popular both in Japan and internationally, with many pieces incorporating traditional techniques and modern designs.
At "IKENOCHA," we offer a special space where Japanese tradition and European culture converge through koimari and Imari porcelain. We invite you to enjoy the charm of koimari and Imari porcelain along with matcha.
