茶禅一味 CHAZEN ICHIMI: The Unity of Tea and Zen
Chazen Ichimi is a concept in Japanese tea ceremony and Zen, meaning "the tea ceremony and Zen share the same spirit." This expression highlights the common emphasis on spiritual practice and mental tranquility in both the tea ceremony and Zen. Specifically, they share the following aspects:
Spiritual Training: Both the tea ceremony and Zen emphasize the importance of mental discipline and spiritual training. In Zen, this is achieved primarily through zazen (seated meditation), while in the tea ceremony, the practice of preparing tea (tatemae) is a way to refine the mind.
Simplicity and Serenity: Both practices are practiced in tranquil environments, removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Tea rooms and Zen temples are simple yet beautiful spaces.
Focus on the Present: The Zen teaching of concentrating on the "here and now" aligns with the tea ceremony's emphasis on putting the heart into every action.
Harmony and Courtesy: The spirit of the tea ceremony, encapsulated in the phrase "wa kei sei jaku" (harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility), is deeply connected to the teachings of Zen. "Wa" represents harmony, "kei" respect, "sei" purity, and "jaku" tranquility, all of which resonate with the principles of Zen.

一期一会 Ichigoichie
It represents "a once-in-a-lifetime encounter," a concept cherished in traditional Japanese culture, especially in the tea ceremony, which emphasizes that every encounter and event is a precious moment that will not be repeated.
It teaches us to approach each moment with respect and gratitude, dedicating ourselves fully to the present and understanding the impermanence of life.
By applying this principle to various aspects of daily life, such as business, education, and family, we can lead richer and more fulfilling lives.
